INTRODUCTION

Diabetes is not a disease, it is abnormality of the whole system. It is a Change in metabolic activity of the body. Junk foods, erratic lifestyle and side effects of allopathy medications are the main culprits of Type 2 diabetes. When Diabetes sets in, the sugar is too high in the blood and changes happens to all body parts.

AYURVEDA AND DIABETES

Wholistic science of Ayurveda is the best way to follow for Diabetes. Type 2 Diabetes can be treated and controlled by Ayurveda. Awareness about Ayurveda is necessary. Human body is run by human consciousness. Nature has a cure for everything. Ayurveda is the mother of all medicines and the greatest science known to mankind. All other types of medications are derived from Ayurveda. Ayurveda describes lifestyle that’s in harmony with nature. Ayurveda stresses on preservation of health, increase in immunity and rejuvenation. There is absolutely no side effects by taking pure Ayurvedic medicines.

UNDERSTANDING “BLOOD SUGAR”

We need food to repair and build new tissues. The food we eat goes to the stomach where it is broken down into small particles. Then it moves to the small intestine, where all the nutrients are absorbed and sent to be used by the cells of the body for all types of metabolic activities. About 108 chemical reactions take place with food to get converted to Glucose. Glucose is used as fuel by the body cells. The cells cannot absorb the Glucose without insulin. Insulin is like the key to the cells. If there is no insulin there is no absorption of food in the body.

So how much Glucose is needed for a healthy adult?

A normal healthy individual has about 5 to 6 litres of blood. For every litre of blood 1 to 1.5 grams of glucose is needed, i.e. only 7.5 grams of Glucose is enough per day. By consuming unhealthy diet, we are dumping much more Glucose into blood than the required amount. Processed foods, bakery products, polished White Rice (raw Rice), Wheat, fatty foods, caffeine, soft drinks, sugary drinks, white bread, Pizza, French fries, junk foods, high protein foods, red meat, excess oils and fats… What happens when these foods are eaten? These foods are highly processed in nature and have less or no fibre. After consuming these kinds of food, the entire Sugar in it, is dumped into blood within 20 to 25 minutes. We need sugar, but we need it to be released slowly throughout the day to carry out all metabolic activities. Pancreas just can’t produce that much excess insulin to push the glucose into the cells. Pancreas will take the load till a certain point, then it will start to convert the excess glucose into Glycogen – Fat – Cholesterol – Triglycerides. After this, it just doesn’t know what to do with the excess sugar by reckless eating. Sugar instead of going into the cells will be retained in blood and then will start to sit on the haemoglobin of blood, this is when the blood starts to thicken. The sugar will start to deposit in the eyes, so vision will start to blur – Retinopathy. Sugar will occupy the nerves – Neuropathy and so on. Since the sugar will sit on the haemoglobin, the haemoglobin will not be able to absorb the oxygen properly. When blood without oxygen flows to the legs, there will be no sensation in the legs, frozen shoulder, kidney filtration decreases etc. all these health issues start.

Where are we going wrong? We need to change our diet and lifestyle. A high fibre diet and changes in lifestyle can help in controlling Diabetes. Another very important point to be noted is, Diabetes does not come from sugar alone, it comes from a very stressful life, bad diet and sedentary lifestyle. But once Diabetes set in Sugar must be totally avoided to control sugar levels in blood.

TYPES OF DIABETES

DIABETES TYPE 1

It is an Autoimmune Condition. The Pancreas produce no insulin. It is often hereditary.

DIABETES TYPE 2

Type 2 is caused by unhealthy diet, sedentary lifestyle, side effects of allopathy medications, Hereditary or excess weight. The body doesn’t make enough insulin or the insulin it makes doesn’t work properly.

GESTATIONAL DIABETES

This happens only during pregnancy because Insulin blocking hormones are produced. It resolves after child birth. Later on, the risk or chances of becoming Diabetic is more.

DIET TO FOLLOW FOR DIABETES

Diabetes can be cured or controlled naturally and not by drugs. Diabetes occur when blood sugar is too high. Sugar is the main source of energy and comes from the food we eat. We need Insulin, a hormone made by the pancreas, it helps glucose from food get into cells to be used for energy. Sometimes body doesn’t make enough or any insulin or doesn’t use insulin well. Glucose then stays in blood and doesn’t reach cells. Diabetes sets in.

It is a myth that Diabetes occur from excess consumption of sweets or sugar. But after the onset of Diabetes one must not consume Sugar. Controlling sugar alone must not be the goal but complete change in the system must be. This can be done by a comprehensive lifestyle and Diet change.

Type 2 Diabetes can be controlled by consuming foods with more fiber. Dietary fiber will help body with all the 108 chemical reactions that take place smoothly to convert the food we eat into glucose and for the body to absorb this glucose.Food quantity must be reduced. Never take food in excess quantity in one meal. Instead of having 3 large meals, have 6 small meals a day. Never skip breakfast, lunch or dinner. There is no single diabetic diet that fits every person needs. There is a general guideline that diabetes and prediabetes must follow and live well. A diabetic diet need not be too complicated and give up all foods. Aim is to eat natural, unprocessed food and very less or zero packed and convenience foods. By a healthy diabetic diet -weight, blood Sugar, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol can be controlled. Weather taking insulin or tablets for diabetes or not, diet is a must. There is no medicine in the world where diabetes can be cured by eating anything. By following a diet there will be no other complications associated with diabetes.

Sticking to a regular mealtime is very important. A diet rich in nutrients and low in fat is recommended. Key elements must be fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes, curds, fibre rich food, Fish, good fats like nuts, coconut oil, olive oil

MILLETS AND DIABETES

During digestion, sugars (simple carbohydrates) and starches (complex carbohydrates) break down into blood glucose. Focus on the healthiest carbohydrates, such as fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes (beans, peas and lentils) and low-fat dairy products.

Carbohydrates plays a major role in diet. Especially Indian diet. Our two important Carbohydrates are Rice and Wheat. All main dishes are made of these two. So, when someone is asked to stop or cutdown on rice and Wheat, they just don’t know what to eat. Basically, we are addicted to only rice and Wheat, we have forgotten the other cereal grains. There are so many types of cereal grains. Cereals in their natural form has excess dietary fiber along with vitamins, minerals, carbohydrates, fats, oils and proteins. When barn and germ is removed mostly starch remain. They get broken down easily and digested quickly in the body and lead to rapid spikes in blood sugar and drops quickly too and making us hungry and get cravings.

Consumption of these polished and refined form of cereals is extremely unhealthy and make people Diabetic. Certain foods like white rice, potato, pasta, white bread, sugary breakfast cereals, instant oatmeal, cornflakes, corn all are Carbohydrates that have high glycaemic index foods, this means after eating these foods the high glucose in these foods because of their refined form dump all the glucose in blood streams within 20 minutes. Whereas more fibre foods like neutral millets and positive millets have excess fibre on their coat and when consumed release glucose little by little and takes about five hours to dump all sugar in blood. Even Millets have glucose but the fibre content in it makes it to release sugar very slowly, and that’s how our body wants. Even though we eat Millets we mustn’t think, it doesn’t have glucose, or we don’t need exercise. Exercise is a must no matter what we eat or drink. All Millets weather negative, neutral or positive millets have the same amount of Glucose in it, the only difference is the percentage of fibre in it is different. To burn one gram of sugar we need to walk for 90 minutes. Therefore, think twice before eating any food. Always add variety to diet. Eating only Positive millets too is not good, as millets contain “GOITROGEN” properties. People with THYROID must avoid Millets. Taking millets once a day is good. Instead of raw polished rice add brown, red, boiled, semi boiled rice, boiled rice to diet. Occasionally JAWA wheat can be added to diet, that has high fibre compared to normal wheat. JAWA wheat is used to make Dhalia. Another important feature of Millets is that it increases the immunity of the body.

NOTE

Many people, after learning about millets go overboard by using millets in all the wrong ways. Remember to have one type of millets at a time. Mixing more than one type of millet is not good for the body. Never make it multi grain.

FLAXSEEDS AND COLD PRESSED FLAXSEED OIL

    • Once you get flaxseed from the shop, clean it for any stone or dirt. Wipe on a towel and store in a bottle. Never dry in sunlight or wash with water or roast or fry
    • Flaxseed must be powdered when necessary, it must never be powdered and stored. The life of ground flaxseed powder is only 15 minutes. It oxidises within 15 minutes from powdering it and will be of no use to the body
    • Flaxseeds oil doesn’t have fibre and protein found in the seeds, but some manufacturers add back the lignans (found in the residue) so check the label on the bottles to know about this, if lignans are added, no need to add one tablespoon of flaxseeds while making the drink. This process is not done with the cold pressed oil that is available in Indian markets. Therefore, we recommend adding one tablespoon of freshly ground flaxseeds to the drink.
    • The oil bottles you get home must be refrigerated immediately or kept in cool and dark place
    • Flaxseed oil must never be used for cooking purpose as it easily oxidises if heated
    • Cold pressed flaxseed oil, Cold pressed Black seed oil (Kalonji), Chia seeds, Apricot Seeds (Kernels) is available in Miracle Drinks head office, RT Nagar, Bangalore. Call us at 080 47482888
